Title: How to remove Door pullstrap end caps on 1977 Transam
Post by: 1977 Transam on June 03, 2012, 10:00:07 AM
Hi.

I'm trying to remove the door panels from the 1977 Transam.

I've removed all screws I can see and have removed the clip that holds the automatic mirror adjuster.

All plastic door clips have been popped and panel lifted up to get panel off of the door.

What looks like is left to be disconnected is the door strap.  not sure how to get the cap ends off without busting them.

Also don't know how to disconnect the power door locking mechanism.

Any assistance would be appreciated as I don't want to ruin a good door panel.

Thanks.

Tommy.

The centre chrome plastic piece is a stick in item....get a stanley knife blade under an edge and pull it up. That exposes the screw that holds the end of the pull strap onto the door.

I tried prying but didn't want to break them.  Thanks for the advice Leigh.  I'll try the stanley knife.

Any idea on the power door locking mechanism please.  Not sure on the method of disconnecting it.

Thanks for your help guys.

Tommy.

The actuators in the doors are held on by two screws on the outside rear surface of the door inner panel.....like the door locks.
You'll probably need an impact screwdriver to shift the screws. The actuators unhook from the door locks inside....door panels need to come off.

Door panels finally off!  Thankyou.

Trying to get the centre console out now.

Everythings easy apart from the removal of the gearshift knob.

Does anyone know how to remove the gearshift knob please?

Once removed I can lift the console over the lever.

Thanks.

Take two small flat blade screw drivers (or similiar). Insert under each side of the centre lock button and lift it up. Remove the button...watch for the metal retainer clip that slides over the end of the shaft...retains the button. Often it comes off with the button or falls off by itself.

Now, there is a circlip down inside the knob that holds the knob to the shaft. You'll need a set of circlip pliers to extract that clip...knob then lifts straight off.

Thanks Leigh.

Looks like I need to buy a set of circlip pliers.  There's always something missing from my tool set.

Bought the pliers this afternoon.  Clip came off the gear selector.

Got stuck again on something else.  Hoping to get this console off today.

If anyone knows how to remove the electricals off the power windows button in the console I would really appreciate the input.

Apart from this I'm noticing that the map tray below the radio is stopping the console from sliding out.

Not sure what's causing it because there is no obvious screws showing.

Please help..............:feedback:

The wires to the power window switch is a bayonet type of plug just pull it straight down and it will pull away from the pins on the switch. The switch will pop out of its retaining clip.
The console should come out with the map pocket still in place there should be a bracket with two screws fixing the console to the lower dash the screws will be under the ashtray on both sides of it.

Success!

She was a bit tight but with a bit of gentle persuasion it came out.

Console is out now.  Has a couple of broken plastic sections behind the vinyl.

Also map tray below the radio was duct taped, cable tied (with glue) and had a piece of timber inserted to keep it rigid.

Someone had previously broken the plastic bracket behind the map tray and did a home made job to fix it.

Does anyone know if this plastic cage is replaceable with a new part?

Thanks.

Tommy

Sounds good.  Thanks Joe.

I'll tee up a pic.  Might take me a day or so to find the cord for the camera.  he he.

I wish everything was wireless these days.
