Title: Megasquirt EFI Conversion
Post by: Rod1448 on May 14, 2013, 07:23:25 PM
Hi,

I have only recently got into muscle cars and purchased a Ford Torino GT which has been converted to EFI with a Megasquirt III and it also has a TE Wideband O2 sensor/controller as pictured below.

I know nothing about these types of conversions but from what I have read, they can be adjusted and tuned with a laptop. I don't want to try it as I will probably stuff it all up.

I have rang a few Dyno places and they all say 'yes bring it in and they will have a look at it' but no one seems to know the brand or unit and they all want to charge me up to $1000 for the Dyno tune  :bolt:.
Is that normal????    It seems bloody excessive!!!

Does anyone know anything regarding these units or where I can take it so it can be tuned and maybe run me through the basics so I can play with it  :burnout:

Cheers
Rod

Hi Rod,
Give me a call or drop in to my workshop so I can suss it out. If I can't help you I am sure I can point you in the right direction before you waste your grand.
BTW nice car. We are still restoring a '70 coupe for a customer with 429 cobra jet running gear.

Cheers, Chris.

Hi,

Thanks Chris, I will take you up on that offer and call you and possibly drop in. I bet the '70 with the 429 goes well. Speak soon.

Cheers
Rod

I'm sure Chris'll point you in the right direction.

You might also try JEM at Ingleburn. Some years back, I had an early Haltech ECU running a factory TPI system on a 70 Camaro. JEM was able to tune it nicely for me. They specialise in non-factory engine management.....might have some Megasquirt experience, maybe?

Hi Leigh,

I spoke to Chris and said he would have a look at it but he no longer has a Dyno. I have been doing some reading on the net and they all seem to suggest to have it tuned with a Dyno first and then it is easier to play with it. I had a look at the JEM site and they seem really good and cheaper than the others I've seen. I might have to give them a go. Thanks for the help.
Cheers
Rod

Hi,

I just thought I would give you an update on my cars ECU system. Thanks to Chris, he was very help full today. The young bloke that works at SMS Performance knows a fair bit about ECU's and gave me a few hints. If I sort out the computer program for the Megasquirt I'll take it back to Chris and the young bloke will give it a go at tuning.

I'm still wanting to have it Dyno tuned first time round to get it perfect and then I can keep a copy of that ECU map and play around with it for different configurations.

I drove out to JEM at Ingleburn as Leigh has used them in the past with good results and looking at their website they deal with 13 different brands of ECU's but not the American Megasquirt ECU's.  I thought since they deal with so many different systems it wouldn't be a problem but it was very disappointing as they would not even get off their chair to have a look at the system, no interest whatsoever. They stated that they mainly only work on Japanese cars. :banghead:

Anyway if someone knows of other Dyno places that deal with aftermarket ECU systems please let me know so I can ring them as I'm sure there will be someone out there.

Cheers
Rod

Hi Rod,
Thanks for the feedback and update. The young bloke works for me is Tobe, he is pretty switched on with late model EFI and aftermarket systems. I am the opposite, old fashioned carby guy who fixes everything with points distributors and double pumpers. That's why we are a great team. We are here to cater for your chariot regardless of what lurkes under your hood, we are not scared of suprises.
Anyways, like I said earlier....if I can't fix it I will find someone for you who can. That's what we here for.

Cheers, Chris.

Sorry that JEM didn't work out....when I used them, they were a one man band and keen to get any work.
Maybe he doesn't care about adding to his experience or customer base anymore.  :toetapping:
Glad you're getting it sorted.
