Title: Melbourne visit..
Post by: ozpont on January 15, 2017, 09:14:48 AM
For those able to visit Melbourne in the future....might find this of interest...a personal account after a  visit to the Old Melbourne Jail.. in Russell St..

The historical Jail where Ned Kelly was hung along with countless others.. is  pretty much opposite the Former Police HQ.. the one the TV Show Homicide always started with....now fronts as a coffee shop..  Anyway..the interesting & sad part to this real story is.... it's hiding  the site of the "Russell Street Bombing" in early 1986. Two arse holes who were later convicted ..planted 66 sticks of jelly in a Commodore and parked it out the front..& blew it to bits just on lunch time.   The result was scores injured but sadly the  death of 21 year old Constable Angela Taylor who was reported to have flipped a coin to go grab some lunches and the rest was history. ........ Angela Taylor,   was the first female Police Officer killed in the line of duty in this nation..
A memorial was held at the site in March 2016 to pay tribute to her & the plaque mounted on the street frontage wall which interestingly  still shows the chips and damage from the blast... the plaque is a simply memory of her... all there to see if one wants or i guess sadly knows to look..or stops to look.
While her workmates have long left the building...now a  multi dorm accommodation facility -  for those that have the time to check it out.  Angela looked like anybodies young smart, sharp daughter .... one that would be admired by all - Dux of her class..  - being the only daughter & pride of her family.   If you have time..stop by &....although this may sound silly..  go say hi to her... take the time to read her memorial at 377 Russell St.
Ironically I could get 15 different types of coffees at the free wifi cafe it now fronts .....but on casually  asking  staff there .... only one person knew about this ... how time marches on.
