Title: Lucky boy
Post by: 65pony on January 24, 2010, 09:34:05 PM
Ok so some of you may know and most don't, late Wednesday afternoon their was a little incident with my car. Turned out I managed to drive it all the way from Maroubra only to do a U Turn down the end of my street (which was a little heavy footed) and blew my water pump. Now it didn't only just pi$$ out all the fluid everywhere but also blew the fan into my radiator and one of the sides of the fan snapped off and sliced my firewall.

Now we're unsure as to how it snapped, some believe it was the HUGE power from the BIG 6 that caused it :gotya: and others couldn't believe it was the original water pump on the engine! Either way it just shows MUSTANGS are build TOUGH!!

Here are a couple pics of how it was.

So now went the job of getting the parts to fix it all. Turns out that with the new engine i'm building I had a spare water pump and fan etc... so all I needed was the radiator. Made a couple calls and had it on Friday.

So now came the fun, to fix it all and put it all back together. Started by doing a bit of panel beating and managed to get the gaping hole back close enough for my dad to weld up and then I pulled off some of the other covers on the engine and painted them all up. Thought it's as good a time as ever to do it seings the engine's pretty much all apart.

So anyway after a hard day yesterday and a couple hours today I managed to get her all back together and running like a charm. She's NO SHOW PONY but I don't think she came up too bad, check it out!

Good to see you fix it yourself. and thats not a bad job
Also just check if the parts are still under warranty
Was it making some noise before that happened, would have expected a bit of bearing noise and if you had grabbed the fan (while the motor is not running):rol: and there would have been a lot of freeplay, but thats all too late now anyway.

haha nope no warranty!

I had actually not heard any noises and when adjusting the fan belt the other weekend didn't notice anything at all. It did have signs of hairline fractures inside once it had blown off but nothing on the outside.

Bit of a freak accident I rekon

All good now though :fantastic:

Good job Joel by the look of the old pump housing the bearing didn't fail it was the casting on the pump that's probably why you didn't here a noisy bearing. I had a water pump bearing let go years ago on my HX Premier it shot the fan threw the radiator I remember it making a lot of noise on Narellan Rd then a big bang then for a split second before the car was engulfed in steam the motor was running quieter than ever before. LOL Its amazing how much of the noise we all love so much comes from the fan.

Yeah Joe it was the casting that failed. haha yep one big noise followed by sizzling then silence

Hey Joel, imagine what damage you could do with a V8 under the bonnet.

Seriously guy, good to see you were able to fix it without too much expense.

I have said before on a post "Joel is one really top youngster, any dad would be proud of." My 2 boys are 32 & 27, so proud of them!
Well done Joel.
When I was 18 I had a morris minor 1000, one saturday nite cruising (don't laugh) I split the top off a piston, sunday morning up to the bmc wrecker at greenacre, second hand piston, couple rings & by 5pm sunday, back on the road. That's the great thing about old cars, so so good to work on.

I have seen those old 4 blade fans crack near the hub along a similar line to where yours broke.  The first one I saw was on my '68 Firebird (around 1982) .  It had cracked about 2/3 rds of the way through before I noticed it.  Luckily, I swapped it out with another used fan that probably had a trillion miles on it that I got from the wrecker.

It is that instant throttle responsivness and almighty torque of that 200 ci that did it.
Better check your engine mounts because they will be next and when they go they will do the exact same damage.
I am glad you fixed it without calling me.
Well done grasshopper.

:fantastic:

While you had the engine out did you bore and stroke it, I'm pretty sure you could get 600 cubes out of it?
Or if you decide to throw out the engine, I could always use it for a squirter window washer motor?:gotya:

Seriously though...good on ya for havn a go!

'Cheap' and 'Blower', there's two words you don't see together too often.

Joel, good on you for getting into a car that you can actually use.

As you know, I've been in the hobby for a long time and the amount of people I've met over the years that say they love american cars and really want to get one, but never get off their lazy arse to buy one, frankly annoys the hell out of me.

After all, they're just cars, not museum pieces.
