Title: Rego plate not fitting
Post by: 1977 Transam on January 28, 2011, 07:07:09 AM
Hi. I didn't think this one belonged in tech talk. Just got my Rego plates for the 1977 Transam. Rear ones are way too long. People have been telling me to fold the plate but I figure that will get me pulled over by a cop. It would also obstruct the lights for the plate. Could trim it from the sides but probably still get into trouble. Anyone got any ideas please. Its cable tied on an angle at the moment. Thought about getting a smaller plate manufactured for it overseas with the same characters like my current one. Rta said they didn't have a shorter size than 372mm.

Once again RTA lied to you.
They do have smaller ones, black and white personalized plates with two letters and three numbers. I have them on my El Camino and they are the same size as the US plates. They cost $90 a year.

RTA sucks.  I like the sticker idea but not the defecting.  he he.

I'll get back to them Chris.  It would be nice to get someone in these government places that know what they're on about.

I had the same problem with my '79 T/A years ago.  I folded up a piece of sheet metal to space the plate out from it's spot so it was flush with the rear bumper.  The light still illuminated the plate (a bit) so it was ok.

I just asked the RTA and was told I can only get a shorter 5 character plate in yellow with black writing.  NSW is very limited with our choices.

I had a similar problem with plates for the vette.
Two letter three number plates solved the problem
as they are only 315 mm long.
As Chris says you have to pay $80.00 per year for the privilege.

What colour could you get yours in though please?  I'm told just the standard yellow plate with black writing.  i want the black with gold writing premium plate.

I kept it simple, just black with white lettering as per my avatar. Checked on the RTA web sight before ordering to see what was available.

i checked half a dozen plate character configurations in standard colour, black and white and black and gold.  All show sizes 372mm.  The lady from my plates said to do that but even the site sucks.

She reckons you can't get smaller plates in black with white writing even though i mentioned to her i know someone who does have them.

Once again, you need to go into the RTA. The people on the phones are half-wits and are only reading off the same internet page you're looking at.

They do have smaller plates, but as Chris mentioned above, they're personalised plates, not standard issue.

Head into your local RTA, and they'll have a section on the wall with every style of plate available attached to it. You'll be able to see the sizes in relation to each other. Ask them everything you need to know - style name, size, price, availability etc - and you're good to go. Easy peasy!

The on you'll be looking for is Black with white lettering. 2 letters and 3 numerals.

Hi Chris.  I searched for TA -400 but it's already taken.  I'll have to try and figure out an alternative.  It would have been a good one to have though.
