Costs him nothing to carry on any way he wants unfortunately.  Best not to get caught up in it otherwise he could start a story up amongst his contacts (if he has any!).  I have a "friend" who has half a dozen cars too and they're are all junk, you couldn't put them together and get one decent car like yours.
